As most of you know, the leaves have been picked up.
The piles of brush were not, as we were previously informed by the Hway Dept.

Christmas Trees will NOT be picked up, so please do not leave them on the road. They haven't taken away the trees in years, and the CC ends up having to pay to have them removed.

Dredging was discussed at the June meeting.

The dredging was done and sand deposited on the Bay side of East Beach Dr.
Guy sent pictures, but I was unable to download them.

Leaf update:
Only leaves in brown paper leaf bags will be picked up.

Residents may self haul to the dump, no charge.
Residents may obtain a voucher from Hway Dept., pay a contractor to haul the leaves to the dump. The voucher would cover the dump fee only..

Residents who are 73 or over, or are disabled can call the town for arrangements for leaf pick up.

No brush will be picked up, and leaves should not be placed in the street, keep them on your property.

Call the Highway Dept for further info.
A handicapped parking permit will not count as proof of disability, someone tried that.

As you all know only leaves in paper bags will be picked up by the town.

NO BRUSH will be picked up, so please don't put it out. It will cause problems for the snow plows.

Disagreements over Southampton Town’s fall leaf pickup program have widened the rift between the Town Board and Highway Superintendent Alex Gregor, as both sides weighed in this week on another round of modifications to this year’s program.
Members of the Town Board this week charged that Mr. Gregor never formally presented the details of the new program to them, and one labeled the program “largely unworkable” as currently planned. Meanwhile, the highway superintendent harshly criticized board members for lacking the political will to help him reform the program, which he maintains is expensive, time-consuming and ridden with abeyances because of snowstorms.
The curbside leaf pickup program, which will kick off officially on Monday, November 14, includes several new facets—most notably the introduction of a voucher system, in which town residents will be asked to haul and dump their leaves for free at the town’s transfer stations in Westhampton, Hampton Bays, North Sea and Sag Harbor.
own Highway Department employees still will provide curbside pickup—but only to those residents who bag their leaves in biodegradable paper bags. The Highway Department will perform only one sweep down each road, and no loose leaves will be accepted.Residents under the age of 73 are being encouraged to self-haul loose leaves to the town’s transfer stations for free by utilizing the voucher system. To obtain a voucher, residents can call the Highway Department at 728-3600. Residents older than 73 or those who have special needs can also call the Highway Department to schedule a curbside pickup of loose leaves.
There will be no brush pickup, but town residents are going to be granted an amnesty period from November 15 to December 31 to drop off branches up to 3 inches in diameter at the town’s transfer stations for free.
Town Board members this week said Mr. Gregor had not formally communicated with them about the details of this year’s program, and that some of them learned of the changes through the media or through Town Highway Department flyers.
Town Councilwoman Bridget Fleming, at a debate last week, labeled the program “largely unworkable.” Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst likewise said this week that she was concern ed the program was too complex and unworkable. Town Board members Nancy Graboski, Jim Malone and Chris Nuzzi said they hadn’t gotten a formal briefing from Mr. Gregor on the changes.

“I think trying to sort out who has to bag and who doesn’t is fraught,” Ms. Throne-Holst said. “I would’ve really loved a joint discussion between the Highway Department and Town Board on this.”

Mr. Gregor reacted strongly to the criticism this week. He assailed Ms. Throne-Holst, claiming she and the rest of the Town Board never accepted his invitation to attend a leaf forum that was sparsely attended in June. An angry Mr. Gregor described Ms. Throne-Holst as a “narcissist” and—turning her phrasing back on her—claimed that her administration was “fraught with holes.”

“She’s full of sh--,” Mr. Gregor said. “She’s a charlatan. If she wants to use those pretty words, that it’s ‘fraught,’ why didn’t she come on board and help me with it?”
He added that this year’s program was the best he could do without the help of the Town Board. He blasted the Town Board for “sticking their heads in the sand” and refusing to deal with the issue.
“There’s a political price to pay for doing anything to the leaf program, because people don’t like change,” Mr. Gregor said.
Ms. Throne-Holst dismissed Mr. Gregor’s attacks, and criticized the highway superintendent for refusing to deal with the Town Board members directly. “I can say frankly that I’m frustrated with Alex not acting as though he’s part of a general administration here,” she said. “He acts as though he’s got his own little fiefdom going on over there. That just isn’t helpful to any of us, or the taxpayers, most certainly.”
She added that calling her names wasn’t going to help the situation.
“He can call me every name in the book, but unless he can come and have substantive and professional conversations with us, to the taxpayers, that’s just meaningless,” she said, “as well as to me. You can call me all kinds of things, but if you’re not going to come and talk to me as the supervisor of the Town Board, then calling us names is unprofessional, and it’s just not substantive.”

Mr. Malone said he didn’t find out about the new program until he was looking at a flyer on the kitchen counter of his Hampton Bays home, which was recently being renovated. “I’m saying, ‘What the hell is this?’” he recounted. “I mean, I’m a seated councilman. I walk into my kitchen, which is a construction site, and I pick up a flyer on the counter [saying] unless I’m 73 years old, the leaves are staying in my yard.”
Ms. Throne-Holst said she received the e-mail invitation to the leaf forum, but it wasn’t clear that Mr. Gregor wanted her or others there.
Asked why he set the cutoff age at 73 for loose leaf collection, Mr. Gregor replied, “It’s got to be some age.” He later explained that the age criteria, in part, was based on his 85-year-old father-in-law in Connecticut, who can still bag his leaves. Originally, he set the age limit at 77, but then after some community feedback, he lowered it to 73.
One of the biggest issues his crews face, he said, is that they are redirected to plowing roads once there is snowfall. It would be a great help, he said, if the Town Board was willing to add part-time seasonal staff to assist with the leaf program. It could cut cleanup time in half, he said, from three months to about a month and a half......................and more

Richard A. Brown passed away on September 2, 2011 at the age of 77. He was the beloved husband of Patricia and loving father of Arthur, Kevin and Pamela. He is also survived by his brothers Steven, Harold and the late Carl Brown. Richard was a cherished grandfather to Brian, Colleen, Lauren and Billy. Visitation will be held on Monday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the O'Connell Funeral Home, 30 Little Plains Rd in Southampton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 AM at Sacred Hearts of Jesus & Mary RC Church in Southampton. We started the curb side pick-up today and DO NOT have any schedule. We suggest that ALL residents put their debris out immediately.

Sandy asked about leaves and I believe all debris will be picked up that is on the curb. Please have the residents be sure to keep the larger items (over 3 inches in diameter and no longer than 6 foot long) in a separate pile. This is very important.

Irene put out the lights here in the Shores Sun. morning. Last night around 6 power was restored.

For those of you who are not here, many trees or branches came down, and the hum of chain saws fill the air.

Hope everyone survived with minimal damage.

The town will pick up branches 3 in diameter and up to 6 ft.
You can also take them to the transfer station at no charge .

1. Kevin Ennis is trying to compile a list of residents with info that would be helpful, especially in an emergency. A form was mailed to you in the President's Letter.

2. Please make sure your name is on your boat if it is left on the beach racks. There are some that have been there for years, and we don't know if they are abandoned as they are not marked.
Boats should not be left there all winter. Please remove them by November.

3. The issue of the narrowing of the channel came up. It was felt we need to write letters to get Suffolk County to put us on the list for dredging. I will put the info up as soon as I get it.

4. July 2nd Cocktail Party. Jim Lange is in charge and he needs help. PLEASE contact Jim if you can help with this party.

5. Reminder about the Beach Ball on July 30th at 230 Elm. All the info will be posted in the next few days.
It is 55 dollars per person, unlimited beer, wine, soda, appetizers and a buffet dinner. We hope you will join in, it was fun last year.

Reminder! The town will no longer pick up leaves so please don't put them out. You will be permitted to bring them to the dump at no charge. You will also be able to leave them out in PAPER Leaf bags available at Lowes , Home Depot, etc
There was a meeting last night with the Town Hway Dept and 4 of our residents attended to get the info and ask questions.

Barbara Taranto contacted me and asked for this to be posted. She is hoping someone in the community may be interested. .

"The Seaman/Taranto house at 116 Turtle Cove Drive is for sale. The difficult decision to sell has been made, and our first thought is to have the property remain in our Shores "family". The house is basically the same as it was constructed in 1948, with minimal updates including a new roof in 1979!!! It is still the "camp" that was our summer place. About 6 years ago we added hot water, so now our outside shower is a lot more comfortable. A main attraction to our property is the view of Turtle cove and Davis Creek as it flows to North Sea. The asking price is $800,000 and is negotiable.

Marilyn Crowley~ Obituary

Marilyn Crowley passed away today. Deepest sympathy to her husband, Larry, and her children and grandchildren. May she rest in peace.

There will be a wake Thursday at Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton. Hours: 2-4 and 7-9 PM

Mass Friday, 10 AM at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Hill St. Southampton.

Marilyn Crowley of Southampton died at her home on January 16 surrounded by family. The cause of death was cancer.
Born in Jackson Heights, to Florence and Bernard Haase, she graduated from the Mary Louis Academy and the Catherine Gibbs School. She married Lawrence Crowley in June  1958, moving to Pelham, New York, in 1966 where they raised their four children. They were longtime summer residents of the community of Southampton Shores. She and her husband  relocated from Pelham to Southampton permanently in 2002.
A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she adored her family, survivors said. Mrs. Crowley enjoyed going to the beach, reading biographies, attending Broadway plays and seeing a good movie. She was a volunteer at the Southampton Town Animal Shelter, and she will be especially remembered for her love of animals, family said.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Larry Crowley; a daughter, Kristine Zaneski and her husband James; two sons, Laurence Crowley and his wife Liz, and Michael  Crowley and his wife Mell; and eight grandchildren. She is predeceased by a daughter, Karen Crowley.
Visitation was held on January 20 at Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton. A funeral Mass was held on January 21 at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church in Southampton.

Many of you know Shores resident Greg Rogan is battling cancer. Greg is scheduled to undergo heart surgery and because of the chemo treatments suffers an added risk.

A memorial service for David Cory of Sag Harbor will be held on Saturday, January 15, at 11 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Old Whalers’ Church of Sag Harbor.
Mr. Cory died on December 28 following a brief illness. He was 80.

I thought you might want to post some pics of our annual Halloween parade. It has been a tradition in the Shores for years with the year round residents and provides our children with a safe, fun and supervised Halloween activity. We are grateful to the Fullam's who graciously host the event, and the hard work of the Oliver and Zaneski families. All are welcome to join in the fun-- the parade typically meets up around 5:30- 6 pm on Halloween evening at the tennis courts and the children trick or treat around the neighborhood and Warfield Way ending at the Fullams house. This year we had the addition of Donald Oliver's haunted fire truck- A great time was had by all! Thanks!

Mary Vario, mother of Carol Kierych and Vincent Vario passed away today, at the age of 96.
Mary bought the house on East Beach with her family from the Collum family many years ago, and later sold it to her daughter, Carol.

May she rest in peace. She was a wonderful lady.

87 people attended. Music was provided by Doug Dwyer's Band.

It was a lovely evening and the crowd seemed to enjoy themselves.

Sally Blanco Richards, age 42, of Fairfield, formerly of Garden City, New York, Washington, DC, and New York City, devoted wife of George H. Richards, II, endearing mother to George, III, William, and Kate, passed away in her home on February 6, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer. In addition to her loving husband of 17 years, George, and their children, Sally's memory will be embraced by her parents. Salvatore and Rose Blanco, of Garden City; her mother-in-law, Sally Richards, of Guilford; one sister, Christine Beaty, and her husband, David, of Garden City; two sisters-in-law, Sarah Richards, of Coupeville, Washington, Ruth Richards, of Cabet, Vermont; three nieces, Alexandra, Elizabeth, and Caroline Beaty. Sally's gift to connect so positively with those she would meet leaves many friends to remember her caring ways. She was predeceased by her father-in-law, Frederic Richards. She was a graduate of Garden City High School, Georgetown University, and Yale University. A nurse practitioner, Sally taught at Yale- New Haven Hospital's School of Nursing for several years before raising her family. Spending time with her family at their summer home in Southampton, New York, where she would play on the ocean beaches with her children, gave her much joy. She was a member of the Saugatuck Rowing Club. A talented photographer, she had a real knack for capturing her subjects character on film. Calling hours are on Tuesday from 3 to 9 p.m. in the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road, in Fairfield Center. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. directly in St.Pius X Church, 834 Brookside Drive, Fairfield. We have snow, snow, and more snow! Some unplowed roads, and leaves plowed all over..
Schools are closed again today out here..

As of yesterday afternoon, the plows had stopped at the end of Scotts Landing..so some residents were unable to get out.

If you are planning to come out over the holidays, you won't be able to get into your drive way..There's a lot of snow , and it isn't melting.

Holiday Decorations

Our entrances have been adorned for the season.

For the last 3 years, our decorations have been vandalized.

Last year, within 24 hours, the wreaths were stolen and the lights on the trees were cut into pieces.

(This is one of the wreaths from last year that was gone within hours)

MANY hours go into the decorating, so PLEASE be aware...if you see anyone standing around up there..stop....We have an idea of who is doing the vandalism..

For those of you who are not here year round, the leaf pick up started in Nov.
We are in District 5, the last.

Years ago they used to rotate..we were last in 2008, and we are last this year.

They have not rotated in several years.

The leaves are piled high in the street, and everyone hopes they will get here before Christmas.But many years they don't. A phone call to the Highway Dept. couldn't hurt.

REMINDER...

THEY WILL NOT remove your Christmas tree if you leave it out, they will pass it right by.

Last Sunday morning a group of long time residents of the Shores tested their skill and stamina.
The good news is they all survived..

This is what Guy said..

On Sunday, Aug 23,2009 there was a Southampton Shores "Old Timers" softball
game. Actually as you can see from the attached photo it was not exclusively
old timers but we would have had a difficult time getting enough of them to
field a team. Nevertheless it was a lot of fun and everyone survived!. We
hope to do this every year.Joe Minogue and Steve Rossetti were instrumental
in organizing the game.

Our Sympathy to the Petrillo Family

August A. Petrillo of Bedford, New York, and Southampton died on August 12 in Southampton, where he spent his last weeks surrounded by his many friends and relatives following a more than two-year battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 60.

Born March 2, 1949, in Mt. Vernon, New York, he attended Saints Peter and Paul Elementary School in Mt. Vernon, and graduated from Riverdale Country School in The Bronx. He received a bachelor of business administration degree from the University of Notre Dame, and a master of business administration degree from Iona College.

He was an owner and partner in the family business of Petrillo Stone  Corporation, in Mt. Vernon, known for having constructed or repaired many recognizable stone buildings in its 100-plus years of business. Notable sites include Lincoln Center, Rockefeller Center, the United Nations, and the monument in Agawam Park in Southampton.

Both Mr. Petrillo’s maternal grandparents, the Sirignanos, and paternal grandparents, the Petrillos, spent their summers in Southampton on Little Peconic Bay beginning in 1950. As the families grew in size and the grandchildren grew in age, his family overflowed to other summer cottages in the community.

Throughout his illness he was treated with the utmost care and expertise at the Pancreas Center of Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, the family said.

He is survived by his wife, Irene (née Gavigan) Petrillo of Bedford and Southampton; two sons, August Petrillo and Christopher Petrillo, both of New York City; and two sisters, Lillian Hauben of Southampton and Rosemary Sullivan of Brewster.

A funeral mass was held on August 15 at Our Lady of Poland Church in Southampton. Interment followed at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Pancreas Center, Herbert Irving Pavilion, 8th Floor, 161 Fort Washington Avenue, New York, NY 10032, would be appreciated by the family.

Beach Party Canceled

Due to unforeseen circumstances, this year's Beach Party scheduled for July 25, 2009, has been canceled.

We will have a party next summer.

Margaret Bishop

Margaret “Peggy” Guerin Bishop of Southampton died on December 14 at her home, after a long and valiant battle with cancer. She was 70.

Born on March 15, 1938, she graduated from Oyster Bay High School and later Elmira College, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in education. She taught second grade in the Bayville School District.

During the early years of their marriage, the Bishops lived in Glen Cove, where their two children were born. With a desire for a more relaxed lifestyle, the couple moved to Southampton, where they built a house on Wooleys Drive. During the summer, they could often be seen entertaining friends and family on their boat, a Grady White with the name of “Prime Time.” They were year-round residents of Southampton Shores for more than 35 years.

A voracious reader, Mrs. Bishop was a frequent visitor to the library. She was also a volunteer at Sout hampton Hospital and an active member of the First Presbyterian Church. Gardening—which she believed to be therapeutic, the family said—was her great passion. She was a member of the Olde Towne Garden Club, serving as its president  in 2000 and 2001. She also worked diligently helping to keep up the gardens at the historic Halsey House, where the garden club plans to plant a shrub in her honor.

She is survived by a son, Todd Bishop of Riverhead; a daughter, Amy Bishop O’Regan of Glen Cove; a sister, Susan Guerin Dundon of Philadelphia; and two grandsons, Evan and Owen, to whom she was completely devoted, family said. She was predeceased by her husband, Alan Paul Bishop.

A memorial service was held on January 9 at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Southampton, with the Reverend Bill Evans officiating.

Don Byrne

Donald Byrne, a Shores summer resident since 1964, died November 2 , 2008 at home with his family by his side.
Don was a graduate of Manhattan College with a degree
in engineering and a Masters in Business from St John's University.

He is survived by is wife of 47 years, Patricia, and 5
children.
Katherine Drumm of Glen Head, John of Lockspur Ca.,
Patrick of Manhassett, Donald of Garden City and Denise of Glen
Wood Landing, and 13 grandchildren.

He was 71 years old.
